Calories Burned Climbing Stairs
Climbing stairs is an excellent, high-intensity workout that builds strength and improves cardiovascular health. Because you are working against gravity, it burns calories at a much faster rate than walking on a flat surface. This calculator helps you quantify that effort into calories burned.
The calculation depends mainly on your body weight, the number of stairs you climb per minute, and the total duration of your workout. Our calculator uses these factors to provide a reliable estimate of your energy expenditure.
How the Calculation Works
The energy cost of climbing stairs is estimated using two main components: the energy required to lift your body vertically (vertical component) and the energy to move forward (horizontal component).
The formula for total energy expenditure (in kcal) is:
Total Calories = (Energy_up + Energy_down) / 4184
Where:
Energy_up (in Joules) = Weight (kg) × 9.80665 × Height (m) × 1.33Energy_down (in Joules) = Weight (kg) × 9.80665 × Height (m) × 0.67- We assume an average step height of 0.1778 meters (7 inches).
- The factors 1.33 and 0.67 account for the mechanical inefficiency of going up and down stairs.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does walking down stairs burn calories?
Yes, but not as many as climbing up. When you walk down stairs, your muscles work eccentrically to control your descent and absorb impact, which still requires energy. Our calculator accounts for the calories burned during both the ascent and descent.
Is stair climbing a good way to lose weight?
Stair climbing is a very effective exercise for weight loss. It's a high-intensity activity that can burn a lot of calories in a short amount of time. Consistently incorporating stair climbing into your routine can significantly contribute to a calorie deficit.
How many calories do you burn on a StairMaster?
The calorie burn on a StairMaster or step machine is very similar to climbing actual stairs. You can use this calculator to get a good estimate by entering your weight and the equivalent number of stairs climbed per minute based on the machine's settings.
