What is Age-Graded Performance?
Age-grading is a way to compare running performances across different ages and genders. It provides a percentage score that represents your performance compared to the world record for your age and gender. For example, a 50-year-old man running a 20-minute 5K can be compared to a 25-year-old woman running an 18-minute 5K to see who had the better performance relative to their peer group.
How is Age-Grading Calculated?
The calculation uses tables of "age factors" developed by **World Masters Athletics (WMA)**. The formula is:
Age-Graded Time = Your Time × Age Factor
Your Age-Graded Percentage is then calculated by comparing your age-graded time to the "open class" (peak performance) world record for that distance.
Age-Grade % = (Open World Record / Your Age-Graded Time) × 100
Factors, Applications, and Related Concepts
- Influencing Factors: The primary factors are your age, gender, and finish time. The tables are designed to account for the natural decline in performance as an athlete ages.
- Practical Applications: Age-grading is a great motivational tool. It allows runners to track their fitness level over their entire life, even as their raw times slow down. A 90% score at age 60 is a far greater achievement than a 75% score at age 25.
- Unique Information & Sources: The age-grading tables are periodically updated based on new world record performances. The methodology was developed by Alan Jones and is detailed in resources from organizations like the USA Track & Field (USATF). The concept is similar to how a golf handicap allows players of different skill levels to compete against each other.
Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)
What is a good age-graded score?
A score of 90% or higher is considered world-class. A score of 80-89% is national-class. A score of 70-79% is regional-class, and a score of 60-69% is local-class. Anything above 60% is generally considered a good performance.
Where does the age-grading data come from?
The age-grading tables are compiled and maintained by World Masters Athletics (WMA), the governing body for the sport of masters athletics (also known as veterans athletics). The tables are based on an analysis of world record performances at every age.
Can I use this calculator for other sports?
No, this calculator is specifically designed for running events using the WMA age-grading tables. Other sports do not have a similar standardized system for comparing performances across different age groups.
